A series of paintings celebrating the enduring popularity of the Volkswagen Beetle, the people's car. It's not just a car though, the Beetle was a symbol of freedom, offering millions of people cheap and practical motoring. The Beetle became synonymous with counter culture in the 1960s and to this day remains hugely popular with a worldwide scene of enthusiasts keeping these iconic vehicles on the road.
Probably the main reason for its popularity was the endearing and organic curves of the body, but the car was also extremely easy to work on. The simple mechanics and air-cooled engine meant anyone could easily make repairs with the help of a handbook and a basic set of tools. Unlike modern cars with their built in 'planned obsolescence', the VW Beetle was built to last.
