Art Painting Number 6

Created during the first few months of 2020 when the world was in lockdown, this series of paintings was made using the only materials I had to hand. The canvas had been salvaged from an art college print room where it had been used as a table top protector, so was covered with years and years of students mark making. Luckily I had some stretchers that had been given to me a couple of years beforehand, and so was able to make up some canvases.

Each painting was about exploring different typography styles, different colours and painting techniques, the starting point for each one being the completely random marks of the canvas. I like to think of these as collaborations between me and hundreds of art students who were excitedly learning their craft, as I was too.

I would spend my days home schooling my children, then paint in the evenings. Each finished painting was posted on Instagram and every single one sold within a matter of hours, sometimes within seconds. I made fifteen in total before I ran out of canvas. Such was the demand that I could have made more, and several people suggested I fake the backgrounds, but that wouldn’t have been right.

This print run is made of just five of the paintings made, because they are the only five that I have good enough photographs of. I never expected that these would be such a success, but then the best and most authentic things are never planned.
